Think career fair ...but not! No suits or resumes here.

Student Startup Networking Night

Thursday, October 8 | 6-8pm

Boxyard RTP in Durham

Open to all students, founders, and Triangle ecosystem members

Join us Thursday, October 8 at Boxyard RTP from 6-8 for an evening of connecting with other students and networking with startup ecosystem members, including founders who are living and growing their startups right here in the Triangle.

There will be pizza and non-alcoholic drinks AND we have grant money to offer Lyft rides for students from across the region. Reach out to us if you’d like a Lyft code!

Bad Pitch - Climate Week Edition

Thursday November 5 | 6:30-8:30 pm

American Underground, Durham

One of the most fun startup events is back, the bad pitch competition! The idea is that each team picks a real challenge, but pitches a totally silly solution. It’s hilarious, and a great chance to connect to startup ecosystem members in a casual setting. This event is a part of the larger Raleigh Durham Startup Company Climate Week.

Students are invited to apply to do their own pitch, as well as come to the free event Thursday night.

Resources

Here’s where we’ll share resources for students that aren’t connected to a particular event or opportunity.

Watch: Recording of Networking Without the Cringe: A Student's Guide

Walking into a room full of strangers doesn't have to feel awkward. You don't need a polished pitch or a resume full of experience. You need a bit of prep, a few good questions and a follow-up that makes people remember you.

Here's what you'll pick up from the session:

  • Pick the right rooms. Where the startup people actually are, and how to tell which events are worth your evening.

  • Prep in 15 minutes. Check who's going, tidy your LinkedIn, and write a one-liner as simple as "I'm studying econ and figuring out if product is for me."

  • Start conversations easily. Openers that aren't small talk, what to ask founders, peers and people with jobs, and how to leave a chat gracefully.

  • Follow up so people remember you. Most people drop the ball here. Do it well and you get a second chance at your first impression.

Make your follow-up stand out with a video resume

A resume shows what you've done. A 60-second video shows who you are: how you come across, what excites you, and why someone would want you on their team. It's the easiest way to make a stranger remember you after one conversation.

Reslink is a video resume platform built by the team behind TechTalk, the fastest growing career community helping people get jobs in tech. Record your intro once, then drop it into your follow-ups, LinkedIn messages and job applications as a single link. You'll even see when someone watches it, so you know exactly when to follow up.

The Reslink team were happy to give us 50% off, because they want to help students land their next opportunity. Sign up here: https://www.reslink.io/ and use the code SEEDLIST50
